Who is Dominick Cruz?
Dominick Cruz, a former UFC Bantamweight Champion, hails from San Diego, California.
His interest in wrestling started from an early age, and by the time he was in 7th grade, he started competing in tournaments.
In 2005, Cruz started his professional MMA career. He competed in the Rage in the Cage and Total Combat Organizations.
Afterward, Dominic joined World Extreme Cagefighting. He joined WEC with a 9-0 record.
Cruz started as a featherweight in WEC and then moved to the Bantamweight category on 7th June during WEC 34.
Dominic became the WEC Bantamweight Champion in August of 2010 after beating Brian Bowles at WEC 42.
In December of 2010, Cruz became the first UFC Bantamweight Champion after WEC merged with UFC. He managed to beat Scott Jorgensen by unanimous decision.
On July 2nd, 2011, Dominic successfully defended his title against Urijah Faber at UFC 132. He dominated Faber and defeated him by unanimous decision.
Cruz’s career was marred by various injuries that saw him take recovery breaks for months at a time. His worst injuries had him take a 3-year break from 2011 to September 2014.
During his return match at UFC 178, Cruz defeated his opponent Takeya Mizugaki by technical knockout.
Cruz regained his Bantamweight Champion title at UFC Fight Night 81 after defeating T. J. Dillashaw in January of 2016.
He would subsequently defend his title successfully at UFC 199 on 4th June 2016 against Urijah Faber. Dominic had his first loss in nearly a decade in December 2016 when Cody Garbrandt won the match via unanimous decision.
After a slew of injuries and a 3-year break, Cruz returned on May 9th, 2020, to try for the UFC Bantamweight Championship again against Henry Cejudo.
Unfortunately, he lost the match via a technical knockout by Henry.
