Rich Franklin went from tackling mathematical problems as a teacher in Ohio to tackling wrestlers in the ring.
The Ohio-born wrestler trained in karate in the 90s. Afterward, he started learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 2014, his efforts paid off when he earned his black belt.
Rich then joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the early 2000s.
He hit the ground running, beating top UFC contenders like Evan Tanner during UFC 42 and Jorge Rivera during UFC 50.
In 2005, Franklin competed in The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale and defeated Ken Shamrock, a former UFC champion. Rich was the first wrestler in the history of the UFC to defeat Shamrock by a technical knockout.
In June of 2005, Franklin earned his first UFC title by defeating Evans Tanner at UFC 53. Consequently, he became the new UFC Middleweight Champion.
Rich successfully defended his title twice at UFC 56 against Nate Quarry and at UFC 58 against David Loiseau.
He lost the title at UFC 64 against Anderson Silva. Perhaps his loss resulted from his previous fight with David Loiseau, where he broke his hand in the second round. Franklin retired from mixed martial arts on 28th September 2015.
